London 2012 set for Gold in social
While social networks may feel like they have been around as long as the Olympics to many of us,
London 2012 is set to bring into focus the dramatic rise of social media.
Rewind four years to Beijing 2008 and Facebook had just 100 million members, while only 6 million people were tweeting. But, in the last four years the blistering pace of users getting social has been enough to make Usain Bolt look like a slouch.
Facebook users now number 900 million, with Twitter not so far behind on 600 million. And the speed, flexibility and interaction of social media will make it the place to stay in touch during London 2012.
For the first time it will be social networks rather than traditional news channels where people flock to find news of record-breaking performances and tell tales of sporting endeavour.
And it isn’t just spectators and fans that will tell their stories through social media, but the athletes taking part, who, along with coaches and organisers, will share their experiences and give an insight into the Olympics on a scale that has never been seen before.
For all these reasons and more, London 2012 is set to be the most talked about Olympics of all time.
